Machine learning

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves. The process of learning begins with observations or data, such as examples, direct experience, or instruction, in order to look for patterns in data and make better decisions in the future based on the examples that we provide. The primary aim is to allow the computers to learn automatically without human intervention or assistance and adjust actions accordingly.

Machine Learning Types

Machine learning algorithms can be classified into three main categories: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning.

  • Supervised Learning: Supervised learning algorithms can apply what has been learned in the past to new data using labeled examples to predict future events. The system is able to learn from the data and produce reliable results. Common examples of supervised learning include decision tree learning, rule-based learning and neural networks.
  • Unsupervised Learning: Unsupervised learning algorithms are used when the information used to train is neither classified nor labeled. Instead, unsupervised learning algorithms are used to find the inherent structure in the data in order to learn more about it. Examples of unsupervised learning include clustering and association rule learning.
  • Reinforcement Learning: Reinforcement Learning algorithms is a type of machine learning algorithm that allows the machine to automatically determine the ideal behavior within a specific context in order to maximize its performance. It is based on reward and punishment. Examples of reinforcement learning include Q-learning and Deep Q-learning.

Applications of Machine Learning

Machine learning is applicable to a wide variety of tasks such as:

  • Image recognition
  • Speech recognition
  • Natural language processing
  • Recommender systems
  • Robotics
