In brief: AI Share of Voice expresses a tracked brand’s share of a predefined population of mentions, citations or recommendations in AI answers. Without stating the denominator, the metric has no unambiguous meaning.
How I use AI Share of Voice in practice
I do not use AI Share of Voice as another number in a presentation. First I define which decision it should clarify, which data or observations support it and who will change something based on the result. Before calculating, I choose one unit, a stable prompt set and cluster weights; I show frequency, context and topic coverage separately. I also record the baseline, measurement date and interpretation limits. This later distinguishes real movement from a change in tool, sample or question wording.
What to watch for
The greatest risk is precision that only looks real. There is no universal AI Share of Voice for the whole internet. The value applies only to the chosen model, market, time and methodology. I therefore compare it over time, on a stable sample and together with business context. If the term does not lead to a concrete next step, it is only a new label.
Questions for a decision
- What exactly forms the numerator and denominator?
- Are prompts weighted by meaning or frequency?
- Are brands compared in the same category?
- What change is greater than normal answer variability?
