In brief: An Ideal Customer Profile describes the type of company for which an offer creates high value and which the provider can successfully acquire, serve and retain.
How I use Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) in practice
I do not use Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) as another number in a presentation. First I determine which decision it should clarify, which data or observations support it and who will change something based on the result. I build the profile from successful and unsuccessful deals, the problem, buying situation, economics, technical conditions and readiness signals. I also record the baseline, measurement date and limits of interpretation. This makes it possible later to distinguish real progress from a change in the tool, sample or query wording.
What to watch out for
The greatest risk is accuracy that only looks precise. A list of industries and company sizes without a connection to the problem and retention is database targeting, not an ICP. I therefore compare results over time, on a stable sample and together with business context. If the term does not lead to a concrete next step, no analysis has been created, only a new label.
Questions for a decision
- Which companies gained the greatest verified value?
- What must be true before purchase?
- Which signs predict a poor fit?
- How will the ICP change content, qualification and the offer?
