Marketing term in context

Internet technologies

In short: Internet technologies are the protocols, software and infrastructure enabling data transfer and operation of web and other network services.

How I use internet technologies in practice

When a company discusses internet technologies, I return the debate to evidence. What do we know from interviews, sales, searches and real behaviour? What is merely an assumption? The output should be a short set of connected choices, not a list of every possible activity. A good choice must be clear to people outside marketing too.

What to watch

The commonest mistake is confusing naming with deciding. The team learns the correct term, but the offer, budget and responsibility stay the same. Beware desk-made frameworks: a precise-looking table is not evidence. If internet technologies change nothing in practice, they are only another layer of words.

Questions for decisions

  • Which specific decision should the term clarify?
  • What supports our claim and what is still a hypothesis?
  • What will we do differently because of this decision?
  • Who owns the change and when will we assess its impact?
