Marketing term in context

Meta tags

In brief: Meta tags are metadata in an HTML page's head. They include descriptions, robot rules, sharing information and display settings.

How I use meta tags in practice

I connect meta tags with the concrete path of a person and a robot. I check what the server actually returns, what renders and where the next step leads. A technical task gets priority according to its impact on findability, clarity or conversion, not the colour in an automated audit.

What to watch

Beware fixing the score instead of the problem. Meta tags can look correct in a tool while an important page remains inaccessible or unclear. A broad change without a sample and rollback is equally dangerous: one technical change can affect hundreds of URLs.

Questions for decisions

  • What exactly does the server return and what does a person see on important URLs?
  • Is this one error or a pattern in a shared template?
  • What is the impact on findability, use or conversion?
  • How will we test the change before rolling it out?
