In short: A preheader is the short email text displayed beside or below the subject in many inboxes. It adds meaning to the subject rather than merely repeating it.
How I use a preheader in practice
I connect the preheader with the customer's actual situation. Content, timing and next step should change according to what a person did and what they can reasonably expect from the company. I first test automation manually, including the error branch and unsubscribe, using a test contact.
What to watch
A database is not unlimited property. With a preheader, problems include unclear consent, old contacts, missing authentication and pressure for frequency. More messages may briefly increase revenue while damaging deliverability and trust, which recover slowly.
Questions for decisions
- Why should the recipient receive this message now?
- Do we have a documented purpose and correct consent type?
- How will we verify delivery, response and business value?
- What happens on error, unsubscribe or data change?
