In brief: Query fan-out is a process in which a system breaks the original question into several related searches to gather material from different parts of a topic.
How I use Query fan-out in practice
In practice I do not use Query fan-out as another number in a presentation. First I determine which decision it should clarify, which data or observations support it and who will change something based on the result. When designing content, I therefore do not copy one key phrase; I cover the decision questions, conditions, comparisons, exceptions and evidence around the topic. I also record the baseline, measurement date and limits of interpretation. This makes it possible later to distinguish real progress from a change in the tool, sample or query wording.
What to watch out for
The greatest risk is accuracy that only looks precise. We usually do not know the system’s exact internal queries; presenting estimated fan-out queries as certainty would create false data. I therefore compare results over time, on a stable sample and together with business context. If the term does not lead to a concrete next step, no analysis has been created, only a new label.
Questions for a decision
- Which sub-questions must a person solve before deciding?
- Does every important answer have its own evidence?
- Is the relationship between parts of the topic clear from navigation and links?
- Where do we have a content gap instead of needing another version of the same page?
