How I use Technical SEO in practice
I do not start with a tool list. I take one important URL and follow its path: does it return the right status, is it allowed in robots.txt, is it in the sitemap, does it have one canonical address, does an internal link lead to it, and is the main content in HTML? Only then do I address scores and fine optimization. During migrations I pay particular attention to old addresses, redirects, and pages that should end with status 410. The biggest technical errors often do not look dramatic; they quietly send search engines to another version of the site or leave an important page without a path.
What to watch out for
Technical SEO is not a chase for green points. A fast page with empty content solves nothing, and schema cannot replace a trustworthy offer. Automatically redirecting every deleted URL to the homepage is just as dangerous. When the replacement does not match the original intent, an honest 410 is better.
Questions for decisions
- Which URLs have business value and must remain indexable?
- Does every URL variant return a clear status and canonical target?
- Is there a natural internal link to each important page?
- Are we measuring a real visitor problem or merely a lab score?
