In short: A product concept builds competitive advantage on product quality and features. The risk is focusing on the product while overlooking the situation in which the customer chooses a solution.
How I use a product concept in practice
When a company discusses a product concept, I return the debate to evidence. What do we know from interviews, sales, searches and real behaviour? What is merely an assumption? The output should be a short set of connected choices, not a list of every possible activity. A good choice must be clear to people outside marketing too.
What to watch
The commonest mistake is confusing naming with deciding. The team learns the correct term, but the offer, budget and responsibility stay the same. Beware desk-made frameworks: a precise-looking table is not evidence. If a product concept changes nothing in practice, it is only another layer of words.
Questions for decisions
- Which specific decision should the term clarify?
- What supports our claim and what is still a hypothesis?
- What will we do differently because of this decision?
- Who owns the change and when will we assess its impact?
