In short: Cross-selling offers a customer an additional product or service related to their original purchase. It should simplify the situation, not merely increase cart value.
How I use cross-selling in practice
I assess cross-selling in the context of the entire page. Heading, copy, controls, speed and feedback must explain together what can be done and what happens next. I first fix obstacles to the task; decoration and effects come only once the basics work.
What to watch
A component is not finished merely because it works with a mouse. I check keyboard use, contrast, zoom, screen reader, slow network and no-script state. Accessibility and performance are part of the same experience, not an add-on.
Questions for decisions
- What task should the person complete on the page?
- Where might they hesitate, make an error or lose context?
- Does the solution work on mobile, with a keyboard and on a slow network?
- What signal will show that the change really helped?
